Reel News - March 10th

Welcome back to another iteration of this little weekly column where we look to recap everything important that happened this week in film news. Let's get started...

In The News

  • Disney is under fire after Gov DeSantis' teams of homophobic assholes decided to ban the word "gay." Disney famously funds all sorts of politicians and thus, was forced by patrons and employees alike to address the controversial new law. After a poorly received non-statement, Disney found itself in trouble again. This time the call was coming from inside the House of Mouse itself, with animators and employees calling out the company for straight-washing previous projects.

  • In what made be the coup-de-grace for the Golden Globes, HFPA's longtime PR firm Sunshine Sachs has parted ways with the association. The move is pretty significant as Sunshine Sachs was the last remaining PR firm still onside with the Globes. It's feeling like curtains for the not-so prestigious award. And to think this could have been avoided if they had just added some more Black People.

  • Fresh off the Elvis trailer premiere, Austin Butler is riding that momentum wave straight into the spice-filled planet of Arrakis. Rumour has it that Butler has beat out Harry Styles and Tye Sheridan for the role of Feyd-Rautha in the Dune sequel. Allegedly joining Florence Pugh who is maybe going to play Princess Irulan Corrino

What To Watch

  • If youre looking for something new to check out in theatres, there's slim pickings. You can try out the dystopian Gold, starting Zac Efron. The survivor thriller had a limited theatrical run early this year but is hitting more screens this weekend.

  • On the other hand if you're looking for a fun night in, boot up that Disney+ and check out the latest Pixar film Turning Red. Set in our very own Toronto, this movie is a coming of age story starring a cute girl turned red panda. Very Ranma 1/2

  • On the Netflix side of things, Ryan ReynoldsThe Adam Project is another option. If you're into time travel or Ryan Reynolds, this might be the movie for you!

Coming Soon

  • Speaking of Netflix, Judd Apatow's latest movie The Bubble got a trailer and frankly I'm here for it. It looks great! The only potential downside is that it seems to be VERY COVID centric.

  • Duel of the Fates? I'm in.
