Submissions

For Writers:

Layered Butter is committed to publishing insightful and engaging works for both established and emerging writers, journalists, and critics. We are currently accepting submissions for our website and physical publications.

Each volume is built around a particular abstract theme/genre/director/actor, and we open up the submission process for each new issue 2-3 months in advance of the submission deadline.

Regarding the kind of submissions we strive to publish, here is a list of what we are NOT looking for:

  • Movie reviews

  • Clickbait listicles

  • Contrarian hot takes

  • Works that have been previously published (y’know, for legal reasons)

We’re open to other aspects of formal analysis and cultural criticism, interviews, essays, etc. No pitch is too absurd. Our essays and criticism works tend to be between 1000-2000 words, though we are open to longer pieces. Layered Butter is meant to be a community that encourages collaboration.

If possible, please include samples of previous work.

Due to the volume of submissions we receive, we are only able to respond to writers whose work is selected for inclusion.

For Artists:

Layered Butter is a curated print publication dedicated to film-inspired art.

We’re always looking for artists with a distinct point of view and a deep understanding of cinema. If your work engages critically with film — not just aesthetically, but conceptually — we want to see it.

Selected artists are featured in our print volume alongside essays, interviews, and original commentary, and distributed through leading cultural retailers and institutions.

If you believe your work belongs in that conversation, please submit it below.

Due to the volume of submissions we receive, we are only able to respond to artists whose work is selected for inclusion.
