Reel News - Feb 24

Can you feel it? Can you feel how quickly we are approaching the Oscars? Oh, what a wonderful time. Maybe. We’ll see.

In The News

  • Speaking of the Oscars. They are really proving to be an unmitigated disaster this year, huh. Every year, of course, there’s conversation of snubs (this year, the big conversation seems to be centred around one Ms. Lady Gaga). After that was over, the news came in fast and furious. This included a new category to be handed out in ceremony to the Twitter community’s choice? Aside from learning NOTHING from the Boaty McBoatface scandal of years past, it was a questionable choice at best that if anything only serves to highlight the disconnect between the people that vote for the Oscars and those that don’t. They are of course living in regret, as the top movie choice seems to be something they were not hoping to attach their prestige to, regardless of how you may feel about it. On top of that, we have now learned that to keep this ceremony nice and agile (who wants this from the ceremony?), several awards will be handed off camera. It is quite an accomplishment to find such a disrespectful gesture to your own industry by the biggest award ceremony.

  • As you may know, Russia has currently invaded Ukraine. First of all, if you’re looking for some reputable voices to follow the story may I recommend. The film news angle to this is a little different, however. First lets get out of the way that AnnaLynne McCord, no matter her intentions, has put out the goofiest, most out of touch response I’ve seen in reaction to ANYTHING, lets alone the escalating war. On the other hand, it is notable that Sean Penn is currently on the ground in Ukraine, continuing his work for a documentary aiming to chronicle Russia’s ongoing invasion of the country. Penn himself is not immune to controversy but on this specific point, the Office of the President of Ukraine had some strong words of support.

  • Finally, in Toronto news, the absolute babes at the Toronto Film Festival have confirmed that things are back to normal when it comes to planning for the 47th iteration of the festival. Mark your calendars, film fans: September 8 to 18 we’re partying in Toronto.

What To Watch

  • Musicals stans will have reason to celebrate when Cyrano opens this weekend. The musical romantic drama starring Peter Dinklage and directed by Joe Wright is getting glowing reviews and promises to be a fun retelling of the 1897 Edmond Rostand play.

  • If you don’t want to head into theatres, make sure to check out Hulu’s Three Months. Directed by Jared Frieder and starring Troye Sivan, the story tells a queer story in an authentic way. Not viewed from the prism of endless tragedy or campy aloofness, this one is definitely worth your time. Full review coming this weekend.

  • Finally, if you’re a Foo Fighters fan, Studio 666 is coming to a screen near you. Can’t officially endorse this one but if you’re a fan of Grohl’s music, seems like you would enjoy this.

Coming Soon

  • I’m all shook up… Baz Luhrmann is looking for a comeback with his take on Elvis. Fun!

  • Maybe you were a fan of the old TV show The Fairly OddParents. If so, please explain this trailer. Thank you.

  • And finally, if you have some kiddos around maybe The Bad Guys is something that should be on your radar. I guess its Zootopia meets Suicide Squad.
