Notes on Volume 7: Stanley Kubrick

When we started working on this volume last year, we were hoping it was going to be a quick production. Seven volumes in, there's enough processes in place that no part of this should have been a surprise. But when you're a two-man team running a company, you should know better than to make grand plans too far in advance. Between juggling deadlines, coordinating interviews, and curating the best Kubrick art we could find online, the three-month project turned into something much, much longer. And yet, it feels right that a volume dedicated to Stanley Kubrick, one of our most famous perfectionist directors, would refuse to be rushed.

Now when it comes to the book itself, the challenge became what to include. When we reached out asking for contributors the response was incredible (and a little overwhelming). We're really sorry to anyone we were not able to include in the final cut, but so grateful for the incredible talent our contributors brought to this book.

Each of our features dives deeper into the mind of Kubrick, exploring the question that's fascinated film lovers for decades: Was he a cold, calculating perfectionist or something more complex? We explore how Kubrick's technical mastery served not to distance us from humanity, but to bring us closer to understanding ourselves.

Whether you're a longtime Kubrick scholar or just beginning to explore his work, we hope this volume will help deepen your appreciation for someone who is inarguably one of tallest towers of the cinematic world. We hope you enjoy reading this book. Please do let us know what you think.

The Artists

Putting together a volume of this magnitude is truly a team effort, and it wouldn't have been possible without our incredible artists. The most common feedback we receive is about the fantastic quality of the artwork, and it's easy to see why. One of the limitations we have with a physical product is that we can’t link you directly to where you can find the artists and see more of their amazing work.

Alice Iuri, Barrett Chapman, Bartosz Kosowski, Dalton Frizzell, Ethem Onur Bilgic, Graeme Neil Reid, Hadi Karimi, Haddon McKinney, Jason Edmiston, Jay Shaw, John Keaveney, Jonathan Bruns, Lavinia Terletchi, Mark Levy, Murugiah, Nagy Laszlo, Neha Ray, Nick Runge, Oliver Barrett, Rapscallionart, Rich Davies, Rory Kurtz, Russell Treloar, Ryan Prestridge, Sarah Sumeray, Steven Wilson, Tomasz Majewski, Tomer Hanuka, and Tyler Stout.

Special thanks to Lester L., Johnny V., and Alex B. for their invaluable feedback in the early stages of the book's design.

A huge thank you goes out to our incredible writers who contributed to this volume.
