Reel News - Jan 27

Another week of existence on this cold planet we call Earth. Let’s get started.

In The News

  • It’s everyone’s favourite season! Award Season. The guilds representing the directors, producers and writers all released their nominations (DGA. PGA. WGA.), one of the last stops as our award season train continues barreling toward the final destination: The 94th Academy Awards. It’s going to be an interesting year. Don’t forget to stay connected with our podcast for all the latest news.

  • The geopolitical complexities of Hollywood in China continue. Keanu Reeves’ outspokenness on Tibet issues may lead to a boycott of the new Matrix movie, meanwhile Fight Club (RIP Meat Loaf) got a new, sudden, less satisfying ending (ah the magic of movie-making)

  • Finally, Variety released their famous series Actors on Actors. The big question was who the MYSTERY GUEST sitting opposite Lady Gaga was going to be (my money was on Patrizia). The reveal was rather underwhelming. You can watch the full series here.

What To Watch

  • Not much new going to movie theatres yet. Scream (2022) is still there, so if you haven’t go check it out. If you need further convincing, our very own Andrew Frye gave it a 4.5/5 aka this one is fucking worth it. Read his full review here.

  • On a personal level, I just wanted to recommend you check out the documentary The Conductor.

  • If you never saw John Cameron Mitchell’s Shortbus (2006), it’s getting a 4K release. So if you ever wanted to see one guys humming the American national anthem into another guy’s asshole, this one’s for you patriot!

Coming Soon

  • Uncharted put out a new trailer, trying to convince us it will be the movie to finally break the video game curse (spoiler alert: they didn’t and they won’t be)

Layered Butter + Final Thoughts

  • If you haven’t purchased our Modern Horror issue yet, get your pre-order in before the price goes up on February 1st. Pls, feel free to add your name to our acknowledgments page here.

  • We really do need our movie community to start putting some more effort into poster creation. Batman’s last attempt …wasn’t it.

  • If you haven’t yet joined our Discord community, you can do that by clicking here. You’ll find all the main Layered Butter founders and contributors there, in case you want to yell at us about anything directly! (Please don’t yell at us.)
