Reel News - Jan 20
Hey movie (and TV) lovers! Thank you for joining us for the inaugural film related weekly recap. Let’s get started.
In The News
Good news for the Bong hive! Bong Joon Ho has found his next film project, following his Parasite success. According to Deadline, the director is expected to write and direct an adaptation of Mickey7, a novel by Edward Ashton. Bong allegedly is interested in having Robert Pattinson to star. Holy team-up, Batman!
Big week for all the Baywatch stans, as the news has been coming in fast and furious on the Pam & Tommy front. The Hulu show based on the lives of Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee is getting quite a bit of press. From Lily James talking about the challenges of becoming the blonde bombshell to confirmation of who is voicing Tommy Lee’s penis (I mean, if you’ve heard anything about the leaked sex tape, you just had to know that thing was sentient).
To end on a sadder note, 2022 is on the same type of depressing bullshit 2021 was on. On Wednesday, it was confirmed that Cesar-winning actor Gaspard Ulliel, of It’s Only the End of the World and Paris Je T’Aime fame, passed away following a tragic skiing accident. Ulliel was expected to be seen next in Marvel’s Moon Knight
What To Watch
The fifth movie in the Scream franchise, Scream (2022) is now in theatres. If your local theatres are open, then I suggest you head over and go check this out. Reviews have overwhelmingly positive, promising an exciting new entry in this now classic horror series.
Asghar Farhadi’s new movie A Hero will be available on Amazon Prime. Our own Rafael Cordero reviewed the movie when he saw it at TIFF and called it “…incredibly honest, moving and powerful.” You can read that full review here.
Coming Soon
Amazon Prime gave us our first look at their new Lord of the Rings series, all while not letting us see anything at all. Except for the title (which you can see in whichever language you want apparently)
Meanwhile Marvel released a second look at the next project in their Phase 4. Moon Knight starring Oscar Isaac, Ethan Hawke and the late Gaspard Ulliel arrives on Disney+ later this year.
Layered Butter + Final Thoughts
If you purchased our Modern Horror issue, that’s getting finalized to head to the printer. You should have received an email already with this update, but if you didn’t… feel free to add your name to our acknowledgments page here.
Betty White would have been 100 on January 17th, had she not passed away right before 2021 ended. She was incredible and cared very much about a variety of causes including animal welfare.
If you haven’t yet joined our Discord community, you can do that by clicking here. You’ll find all the main Layered Butter founders and contributors there, in case you want to yell at us about anything directly! (Please don’t yell at us.)
Finally, this weekly recap will also be available as a LinkedIn Newsletter, and some parts of it will be part of our monthly newsletter. Many ways to stay in contact!
