Reel News - Feb 03

Hey, January is finally over! The evil has been defeated. February is off to a beautiful start so let us begin.

In The News

  • Award seasons continue and this time we’re heading across the pond to find out who is nominated for the BAFTAs. The most bonkers race this year seems to be best actress, where all the presumed lead contenders (except for the true actress™) were snubbed including Olivia Colman, Nicole Kidman and Kristen Stewart. Other surprises included some renewed attention for Adam McKay’s Don’t Look Up, and some love for Passing actresses Ruth Negga and Tessa Thompson. However the biggest shock for me was the absence of Kenneth Branagh. He’s the hometown hero here! But I guess no one is a prophet on their own land. Next week we have the big one with Oscar noms coming out on Tuesday!

  • In news that makes you want to…Scream, the success of the fifth installment in the franchise (which we reviewed here) has guaranteed a greenlight for the sequel. Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett are expected to return to direct with Vanderbilt and Busick back at the writing duties. Neve staying BOOKED and BUSY.

  • Finally, there was a very interesting piece in IndieWire about Renee Zellweger’s upcoming limited series The Thing About Pam. In the project Zellweger is aided with makeup and prosthetics to transform into mom-turned-murderer Pam Hupp, a woman who is heavier than Zellweger. The author argues that “[the] industry seems to be doubling down on pretending fat women don’t exist,"] and instead are just a costume for skinny actresses to wear, referring to the fact that the images showed up fresh after the whole Sarah Paulson as Linda Tripp debacle, which unfortunately is not even the most unkind portrayal of Tripp.

What To Watch

  • Finally some new movies worth watching out are hitting theatres. If you’re a Jackass fan, the latest film in the franchise is for you! And if you’re not a Jackass fan, it’s time to get with the program. We’re all about it now. Check back later this week for a full review.

  • If the world collapsing all around you isn’t enough then may I suggest Roland Emmerich’s Moonfall. While reception has been, uh, mixed, to put it kindly, it is from the man that brought The Day After Tomorrow so I’d expect something similar there.

Coming Soon

  • This one goes out to all the horror girls! The new new Texas Chainsaw Massacre (starring the absolutely adorable Elsie Fisher) put out a new trailer. Does Netflix have a winner with this one? We’re gonna have to see.

  • Meanwhile Paramount+ (man, there’s almost too many choices these days) revealed their 26th century war TV show Halo. If you read the YouTube comments (and I dont know why you would?), it seems like video game fans are already unhappy.

  • And last but not least, The Batman continues with its marketing blitz as we get closer to the release date. They released at clip from the upcoming movie (also apparently the playlist this Batman would listen to, and frankly I love this for us.)
